A few weeks ago our lead concept artist Jose Brand put together a show with comrade-in-arts Taylor Leigh over at Cinderbloc Studio. Entitled Beings, the gallery exhibited Taylor and Jose’s uniquely psychedelic styles, packed with mischievous robots, zombie teddies and Frankenstein dinosaurs, as well as Jose’s now internet famous adaptations of classic landscape oil paintings into Star Wars art. It was awesome to see Jose’s hard work and passion rewarded, and to check out the pieces he creates outside his Kano projects. Jose is always drawing, painting and sketching, so be on the look out for his next show, coming soon. Check out more photos of the show after the jump.
We’re proud to announce that KANO/APPS Lead Developer Loren Stewart took home Employee of the Year at the 2012 VIATeC Awards last night. Just being counted among the talented list of nominees was humbling enough, winning was truly incredible. We’d like to thank all the other nominees, Dan Gunn and all the hardworking folks at VIATeC, everyone who came out last night, and of course unending thanks to Loren for his years of drive, dedication and inspiration.
Last night was a blast. Gather a roomful of the innovators reinventing Victoria’s business landscape and throw in some lightsabers, and you’re bound to have a good time. The night culminated with a massive lightsaber brawl (Jedi versus Sith) complete with flying battle orcas. We apologize to the glassware at the Victoria Conference Center. Check out some photos of the event below.
We’re so excited to announce that KANO/APPS is a finalist for four VIATeC 2012 Awards! We’re up for Employer of the Year, Online Strategy of the Year, our creative squadron is in the running for Team of the Year, and Lead Developer Loren Stewart is gunning for Employee of the Year. We’re up against technology masterminds like Atomic Crayon, Neverblue, YUPIQ, Race Rocks Digital, Smart Dolphins IT and an army of other equally tough competitors. Check out a full list of the 2012 VIATeC Awards finalists here.
We’re honoured just to be counted among the calibre of talent on that list. We truly believe Victoria is one of the best places to live and work on earth, that it houses some of the sharpest minds, and that it will have huge ripples in the international technology industry. Getting recognized by our peers means the world to us. Thank you!
The Awards go down May 31. We hope to see all of you there!
There’s a little bit of KANO/APPS math for you. Vancouver Island is a spectacular place, surrounded by the grand blue sweep of the Pacific, draped with rolling mountains, shaded valleys and ancient forests. The view out the KANO/APPS window makes a compelling case for lacing up your shoes (or hiking boots, or hell, sandals) and heading outside. Throw in the fact that the West Coast winter is a slap on the wrist compared to most of Canada, and there’s no excuse for not getting lost for a time in the beautiful splendour in and around Victoria. With the gloomy winter weather rolling out and spring and summer approaching, it’s time to pump the tires on your mountain bike, dust off your running shoes or slip into a swimsuit.
We never forget at KANO/APPS how incredibly fortunate we are to live and work in a this place. As a head start to your summer, we’ve thought about some of our favourite outdoor activities–biking, running, hiking, skateboarding, snowboarding and skiing, rock climbing and, of course, swimming–and compiled a crash coure to summer fun in and around Victoria. Read on to see.
